Minder claims woningbranden in 2019, maar hogere schade per claim

Het aantal claims bij verzekeraars voor woningbranden is gedaald in 2019, maar de gemiddelde schade per claim is hoger, zo blijkt uit de Risicomonitor Woningbranden van het Verbond van Verzekeraars. In 2019 ontvingen verzekeraars 64.427 claims tegen 80.979 in 2018. Rookmelders kunnen een rol spelen in een verdere daling van het aantal claims. Omdat een rookmelder huisbewoners vroegtijdig waarschuwt voor brand kunnen dodelijke slachtoffers, brandwonden en ernstige brandschade worden voorkomen.

In 2019 vielen 22 dodelijke slachtoffers bij fatale woningbranden tegen 33 in 2018, zo blijkt uit cijfers van de Brandweeracademie. De materiële schadelast voor verzekeraars bedraagt ruim 220 miljoen euro in 2019 en is weinig veranderd ten opzichte van 2018. Wel is de gemiddelde schade per brandclaim toegenomen van 2.764 euro in 2018 tot 3.440 euro in 2019. Zoals gebruikelijk ontstonden de meeste woningbranden rond de jaarwisseling. In de provincies Overijssel en Limburg registreerden verzekeraars in 2019 relatief de meeste claims. Gemiddeld woedden daar 11,2 branden per 1000 huishoudens, gevolgd door de provincies Noord-Brabant (10,3), Gelderland (9,1) en Drenthe (9,1). Belangrijke oorzaken van woningbranden in 2019 waren menselijk handelen, een defect of slecht werkend apparaat en kortsluiting.

Gewonden door brand voorkomen 

Rob Baardse, directeur van de Nederlandse Brandwonden Stichting: “In de drie Nederlandse Brandwondencentra in Groningen, Beverwijk en Rotterdam, waar de meest ernstige brandwondenslachtoffers worden opgenomen, is een derde van het aantal patiënten slachtoffer van vuur en vlammen. Bovendien gebeurt twee derde van de ernstige brandwondenongevallen in en om de woning. Wij willen slachtoffers van brand voorkomen. Vroege ontdekking van een brand, doordat de rookmelder afgaat, is daarbij van het allergrootste belang.”

Rookmelders essentieel 

Hilda Raasing, portefeuillehouder Brandveilig leven van Brandweer Nederland: “Het is zorgwekkend dat 70% van de huishoudens wel een rookmelder heeft, maar dat deze in maar 35% van de gevallen werkt én op de juiste plaats hangt. Daarom voeren we in oktober actief campagne, om mensen aan te zetten rookmelders op te hangen, ze goed te onderhouden en te vervangen als dat nodig is. Want goed geplaatste en werkende rookmelders redden levens!”.

Brandschade voorkomen 

Richard Weurding, algemeen directeur van het Verbond van Verzekeraars: “Snel handelen bij brand is erg belangrijk. Goede rookmelders in het hele huis alarmeren je snel. Zo kan je vlug zelf actie ondernemen om de brand in de kiem te smoren. Daarmee kun je ook brandschade aan je huis en eigendommen beperken, of zelfs voorkomen”.

Brandpreventieweken 

Het Verbond van Verzekeraars, Brandweer Nederland en de Nederlandse Brandwonden Stichting werken binnen het Netwerk Nationale Brandpreventieweken samen om brand, brandslachtoffers en brandschade te voorkomen. Goed geplaatste én onderhouden rookmelders kunnen hierin een belangrijke rol vervullen. In oktober voeren zij hiervoor campagne met het thema ‘Rookmelders redden levens’.
